How to scope gabion retaining walls before pricing
Gabion walls combine engineered baskets with correctly sized rock fill. Basket depth, lacing, bracing and tier geometry matter because a decorative wire cage is not automatically a retaining structure suitable for the proposed load.
Filter fabric and foundation preparation are especially visible decision points. Water may pass through the rock face, but fine soil still needs separation and the discharged water still needs a safe path across the property.
Basket quality should be specified by more than overall dimensions. Wire coating, mesh size, diaphragms, lacing and bracing affect how the units hold shape during filling. Ask for the proposed product data and the design assumptions behind each tier.
Rock grading influences both appearance and containment. Pieces need to suit the mesh, pack without excessive voids and present a stable visible face. If hand-facing is included, the quote should say where it applies and what finish variation remains normal.
Filling sequence matters because uneven loading can distort a basket before its neighbours restrain it. Clarify lift heights, temporary bracing and how adjoining units are connected, especially at corners or changes in wall direction.
Gabions can occupy more ground than a post-and-panel wall. Set out the full base and batter on the site before committing to the look, then check that paths, fences and garden access still function around the finished footprint.
Where runoff carries fine soil, use filter separation and erosion protection behind and at the ends of the wall. A permeable rock face is not a licence to let concentrated water cut around the structure or undermine the founding surface.
At completion, inspect for bulging, loose lacing, incompletely filled corners and exposed sharp wire ends. Keep the toe visible enough for future checks and prevent climbing where basket geometry or adjacent levels could create a fall risk.
