Galvanised posts have to be founded below the seasonal moisture zone, so footing depth and concrete volume usually move the price more than the panel choice does. On narrower Gungahlin and Molonglo blocks the delivery and lifting route often settles the panel length before anything else is decided.
Suitability is a shorter conversation in Canberra than most people expect. Frost, snow-melt and ground that stays wet through winter shorten service life wherever drainage is poor, so agree the treatment level, post detail and expected replacement horizon before comparing this with a masonry route.
Masonry behaves as one assembly: footing, reinforcement, core fill and wall thickness together. That makes it a design-led route rather than a material swap, and it suits established inner-south blocks where a crisp rendered face has to line up with existing paving, steps and garden structures.

Free-draining does not mean drainage-free. Baskets need a prepared foundation, graded rock, filter separation from clay backfill and a face that stays stable as the fill settles. They earn their place on erosion-prone batters and creek margins more than on tight suburban boundaries.
Reactive clay is why this is a structural line item in Canberra rather than a landscaping extra. Trace where water arrives, where it is held behind the wall and where it can lawfully continue under City Services requirements, then price aggregate, geotextile and outlet access as one system.
Height, surcharge, a nearby building or a boundary condition moves the job onto a design and approval path. Establish early whether building approval or development approval questions apply, and whether AS 4678 design input is needed, so documentation is not discovered halfway through pricing.
Start with the cause. A lean, a bulge, corroded steel and a rotted base each point somewhere different, and blocked discharge sits behind more failures than age does. Ask for a repair scope and a replacement scope separately so the comparison is between two defined options.
