How to scope stone & boulder retaining walls before pricing
Stone and boulder systems need physical room for their mass and batter. A broad natural wall can suit an open landscape yet be impractical on a narrow side boundary where excavation and machine movement are constrained.
The desired stone character should be documented with reference images, but selection also depends on available sizes, stable placement and a base that suits the ground. Gaps and surface texture do not remove the need to manage water and soil migration.
Machine reach is central to boulder placement. Measure gates, turning space and overhead restrictions, then show whether the wall is accessible from above or below. Hand work can refine a stone face but cannot replace safe lifting capacity for large units.
A natural wall needs a deliberate base and batter. Ask how stones are selected and interlocked, how voids behind the face are treated and how the first course resists sliding. A random-looking finish should still follow a repeatable construction method.
Source affects both appearance and logistics. Compare stone type, typical dimensions, colour range and transport allowance, and confirm whether visible samples represent the actual supply. Substituting smaller or flatter material can change the wall geometry as well as its character.
Planting can soften the wall, but soil pockets and irrigation should not undermine drainage or wash fines through open joints. Resolve planting zones after the structural footprint and water path are known rather than forcing them into gaps during construction.
For long runs, discuss how variations in stone size and ground level will be handled at ends, corners and steps. A clear reference line prevents the organic face from becoming an excuse for uncontrolled height or encroachment.
Photograph the completed toe, top edge and discharge points before landscaping matures. Keep vehicle loads and stockpiled material away from the crest unless the design includes them, and inspect after exceptional rain for new erosion or displaced infill.
