Timber selection involves more than colour. Treatment class, species, post material, fasteners and ground exposure all influence the expected service environment. On an older wall, decay at the soil line can be a symptom as well as the visible defect.
Replacement work needs a plan for safely removing retained material and supporting nearby ground. Reusing the old alignment may be unsuitable when the earlier wall lacked drainage or has moved toward a boundary.
Ask which timber components will contact soil and what treatment class suits that exposure. Posts, sleepers, capping and fixings can face different moisture conditions. A proposal that names only the timber species leaves important durability choices unresolved.
The back of a timber wall should not become a fine-soil trap. Review the aggregate zone, geotextile placement and outlet together, then confirm that future garden work will not cover the discharge point. Good drainage also reduces persistently wet conditions around posts.
Existing trees can be both valuable and difficult. Identify trunks and major visible roots near the excavation, but do not promise that every root can remain before the wall alignment and construction access are reviewed. Arborist input may be sensible where a mature tree is affected.
Compare the cost of a like-for-like timber replacement with systems that have a different footprint or service environment. The lowest initial figure is not the whole decision; access, garden reinstatement, expected maintenance and the consequence of another replacement all matter.
On a stepped garden wall, detail how sleeper ends, post tops and capping transition between levels. These junctions are visually prominent and can become water-entry points when improvised during installation rather than resolved in the quote.
Keep product receipts, treatment information and photographs of the concealed drainage zone. Avoid attaching later structures or concentrated loads to the wall without checking capacity. Regularly clear leaves and soil from visible outlets so changes in moisture are easier to spot.
